Initially emerging as a sought out session player in 1998, guitar virtuoso Gil Parris has since become a Grammy-nominated solo artist, released six albums and toured around the world as both a session and solo act. With all that accomplished, Parris has now taken on another role: launching his own independent label, GPM Records. The label’s debut release is Parris’, A Certain Beauty, a collection of seven unreleased tracks and greatest hits. I can appreciate that Parris is a very talented guitar performer; he can take on any genre from R&B, blues, jazz and even Flamenco; but overall, his style is far too docile and contemporary. It feels like I’ve heard these songs before done equally well by other artists. A Certain Beauty is an enjoyable listen whether on headphones or spinning when working around the house – just don’t expect to be blown away. (GPM Records)
