Music Review: Goldfrapp, ‘Head First’

After four innovative albums, and a catalogue of brilliant singles, the British duo of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory have misplaced their mojo this time around.

In Head First, the dream-pop of 2008’s Seventh Tree is combined with an Italian disco sensibility that has the unfortunate simultaneous effect of flattening both their melodies and songwriting.

Only two tracks manage to mash Goldfrapp’s populist synth-dance style with their elegiac side, “Dreaming,” and the closing sonic experiment “Voicething,” but otherwise the rest of the songs fail as a compromise to fans of either.
