What is so great about Ben Sures’ Field Guide to Loneliness is that it doesn’t take more than one listen to fall in love with it. His hipster temperament reminds me of Danny Michel, Luke Doucet and Jeremy Proctor, and like those artists, Sures is a brilliant tongue-in-cheek lyricist. He paints vivid stories of magic ray guns (“Used to Have a Ray Gun”), failed first encounters (“Not on the Town”) and his dad’s perfect sandwich (“Lettuce and Tomato”). While the overall sound is country roots, Sures and producer Mike Lent manage to keep it all very light and poppy, while stretching out on two highlights: “Under Water” is a flamenco-flavoured dreamland and “Drunk and in My Kitchen” contains some cool re-amped vocal effects that groove on a raunchy blues riff. At 14 tracks, this Field Guide flies by in a flash, urging you to replay repeatedly. (Independent)

  • Raygun song reminded me of something John Prine would do- very light but amusing . Who killed the Last folksinger along the lines of who killed Cock Robin very pointed for those who love this type of music worthy of Dylan. He can be little too cute and glib for his own good a la Loudon Wainright ir the Barenaked Monstrosities. but hes ready to take a quirky turn just when you think whats coming next. I bought it and I put it on my mp3 player. It was a fun ride.
